'Campfire'
Stainless-Steel + Corten-Steel + Hand-Carved Granite + LEDs - 14' high, 7' Base
|
A campfire at the water's edge is an event and a signal, a celebration that provides warmth and comfort, extending the setting sun and pushing back the cool night air. Campfire embodies the essence of journey and travel, serving as a beacon for contemplation. The spirit of this artwork helps one find their place in time and space. This iconic waterfront landmark and gathering place fosters community engagement and participation that unite and raise awareness of our heritage, highlighting the power of the present to embrace the significance of the future. With gratitude, we honour and acknowledge the Indigenous peoples who have cherished and protected this land for generations. Their wisdom and spirit continue to resonate within Humber Bay (Toronto). by Herman Mejia (in collaboration with Michael Belmore) Built by Eventscape |
'Together'
Mirror Stainless-Steel + Indiana Limestone + LEDs - 35' high, 15' wide, 130' long
|
The centerpiece of Morris Bicentennial Plaza is an arced stainless-steel and limestone sculpture titled ‘Together’, a gesture inspired by Kennedy & King’s historical connection to Indy. Two overarching geometries that almost meet, to be interpreted as the continuous effort to bring unity and harmony. “This sculpture, in particular, will be an important visual reminder of how and why we must bridge our differences and celebrate our diversity,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett
In addition to serving as the gateway to the plaza, the sculpture is accessible through two mirrored alcoves designed for reflection and photo capture. The sculpture includes programmable LED lighting to highlight the custom limestone and trigger lighting effects at night in the alcove platforms. The objective and vision for this public art sculpture is to create a destination where people can come together, gather, and celebrate in community by Herman Mejia Built by Eventscape |
'Sphere'
Mirror Stainless-Steel + Concave LED Media + Sound + LEDs - 23'9" high, 40' diameter
|
‘Sphere’ is an homage to Indy’s heritage and love for the game of basketball, a reflection of the self, and a blank canvas to tell stories that matter. Morris Bicentennial Plaza provides visitors with an opportunity to interact with the sculpture from within and around it. This dome-like installation is fabricated with the same stainless-steel elements as ‘Together’. Two kinetic screens project live images, video, and sound as randomly selected photos of landmarks across Indianapolis. The projection system is programmable for special events alike.
Adjacent to the home of the Indiana Pacers & Fever, the height of the domed art installation is 23 feet, 9 inches, matching the distance from the NBA 3-point line to the basket. ‘Sphere’ is a blank canvas for storytelling that engages plaza guests in so many ways. “It’s about always leaving that Hoosier hospitality neon light on for all to see and all to gravitate toward” Indiana's Gov. Eric Holcomb said. “Morris Bicentennial Plaza represents a call to action to celebrate our history and diversity, engage each other, and collaborate on programming that brings to life our collective vision of a unified and inclusive community,” said PS&E Chief Executive Officer Rick Fuson. So, creating two distinct sculptures that work in unison and foster community engagement was the ultimate objective. by Herman Mejia Built by Eventscape |
